Summary:

Multi-Skill Operator operates equipment that processes defects out of dried lumber in order to maximize yield.

 

Essential Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to meet all the essential responsibilities and perform each essential job duty satisfactorily.

Safety The employee must follow all Company safety rules and processes, and use proper ergonomics.  Always wears the proper PPE, clothing and footwear. Adheres at all times to the Entanglement policy. The employee must always be aware of their work environment, equipment and the potential hazards. Owns daily cleanliness of work area. Maintains area orderly, clean and free from hazards. It is the responsibility of the employee to work within their physical limitations and not cause unnecessary injury to their self or others.

Attendance The employee is expected to be at their workstation/area at the start of the assigned shift. On time, regular and consistent attendance is a requirement of the job.

Essential functions of the job:

CORE: All Levels

  • Inspect equipment and pre-shift checklist
  • Complete and turn in quality checks daily (every 30 minutes)
  • Complete downtime log and turn in daily
  • Must be willing to cross-train on any position in Opti and be willing to rotate as needed
  • Set-up and troubleshoot machinery on machinery that the employee is qualified to operate
  • Willing to learn different equipment
  • Minimize downtime by quickly unjamming equipment and repairing as quickly as possible
  • Only M3 level employees may change the speed of machines

 

Planer Operator:  Smooths dried lumber in order to achieve desired thickness.

  • Maintain production level in order for Rip Scan to have a constant flow of material
  • Flip boards as needed (if bowed)
  • Straighten sticks in stick cart

Rip Scan Operator:  Scans material to rip in the most efficient way in order to maximize yield.

  • Attention to detail is required to ensure that scanner is scanning widths of boards correctly
  • Ensure that only one board is going through scanner at a time (Automatic/Manual Feed)
  • Scanner must be cleaned at a minimum of every two hours
  • Visually follow board to the Ripsaws
  • Ensure proper board sequencing

 

Ripsaw Operator:  Rips boards lengthwise according to Rip Scan solutions.

  • Ensure proper board sequencing
  • Proper lubrication of Ripsaws
  • Visually follow boards through memory chain

 

Chop Scanner Operator:  Chops defects out of material

  • Pull broken material off of line
  • Clean scanner at a minimum of every two hours
  • Reposition broken/crooked boards to ensure smooth operation
  • Monitor screen to ensure that scanner is sorting material quality correctly

 

Spears:  Chops broken material manually

  • Pull broken material off of line and chop manually
  • Pick up broken material from area
  • Reposition broken/crooked boards to ensure smooth operation

 

Chop Saws Operator:  Chops defects out of boards leaving the chop scan area

  • Monitor/fix chop saws to minimize downtime caused by various errors
  • Ensure proper board sequencing
  • Ensure that kickers are operating correctly
  • Monitor backrip to ensure that chop saws are sorting material correctly
  • Fix any issues with hog belt
  • Monitor sort belts for jamming issues
  • Transport boards pulled out of chop saws back to the Chop Scanner

 

Backrip Operator:  Sorting reject blocks to maximize yield.

  • Manually sort blocks by width at 60 blocks per minute

 

Solids:  Boxes of usable material.

  • Stack solids by length and width
  • Transport reject material back to Chop Scanner
  • Create tags, band, and ready for transport of solids units
  • Monitor/unjam sort lines

 

 

Level Criteria/Requirements/Qualifications:

M2 3 External equivalent: 2 years ·         Cross train on other equipment in Opti

M3 3 External equivalent: 2 years ·         All of above plus have ability/initiative to troubleshoot at least two machine centers

M4 4 Internal: 1 year minimum ·         Lead Operator/Trainer in area

·         Be able to operate and troubleshoot all equipment

 

 

Education and/or Experience ·   High School diploma/GED

·   Prior experience in heavy equipment operation, farm tractor operation, or 30k lbs. Diesel Forklift experience

·   Prefer SAP Software

·   Must have strong verbal and written communication skills

·   Must be able to work well with others in a close environment

·   Must have basic computer and math skills

 

Work Environment The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to:

·   Moving mechanical parts, machines, and vehicles.

·   The Lumber Yard environment is small and the employee must be able to work in close proximity with other co-workers.

·   The manufacturing environment noise level is generally loud and must wear proper PPE.

·   Employees are regularly exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and extreme hot and cold temperatures.

Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

·   Stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle and grip, feel and reach with hands and arms, stoop, twist, and bend 20% of their work schedule.

·   The employee is required to sit 80% of the scheduled shift while performing the Yard Lift Operator position.

·   The employee is frequently required to communicate written, verbal, and hear clearly.

The employee must be able to lift 50lbs frequently at ground to shoulder level during their daily work schedule.
